Details
A classic, countryside red from an ancient producer in an unfashionable region. No wonder it's not widely known. And yet this is Malbec par excellence - it mixes elegance, rusticity and drinkability. Black fruits violet, pepper and earth, with serious weight and tannin. Excellent.
With the astonishing rise of New World Malbec wines from Latin America, it’s easy to sometimes forget that this fine red wine varietal has an ancient heritage of quality French winemaking. Clos de la Coutale is the perfect reminder of that heritage - this ancestral winery, situated in the stunning Lot Valley in the Occitane region of France, has been working with Malbec and other indigenous varietals for six glorious generations. The Bernede family currently oversees 38 hectares of prime land in one of southwest France’s premier appellations. Here, the warm and dry summers result in beautifully ripened grapes, and the complex soils guarantee heaps of expression and a rainbow of fascinating flavours. Clos de la Coutale, like so many contemporary wineries, perfectly blends respect for tradition with forward-thinking winemaking techniques, ensuring that sustainability remains at the heart of their practices, and that the end result - those gorgeous, elegant, and full-bodied wines - upholds their peerless reputation. Santé!

Pairing guide
This full-bodied red from Clos de la Coutale really calls out to be paired with some seriously big and boisterously-flavoured food. We’re talking deeply savoury stews and hotpots, bubbling with hunks of beef and lamb, and swimming in gravy studded with root vegetables. We’re talking char-grilled cuts of beef, or Mexican favourites like chilli con carne and black beans… and we’re talking wild mushrooms, melted blue cheese, pepper, sage, and dried chipotle chillies. Bring out the big flavours, get creative with your meat, and you can’t go wrong!

Wine region

Cahors, France
Whilst Malbec may have found its new world home in Argentina, it is essential not to forget its roots. Once a mainstay in Bordeaux (where it is still used), MAlbec's spiritual home in France is Cahors in the country's southwest. This region is complete with gastronomic flair and rich, dense, deeply coloured red wines. There is a range of complex soils in Cahors, and increasing investment and a younger wave of exciting winemakers have seen the wine styles in this part of the world become more and more modern over the years. So if you fancy spreading your Malbec wings, Cahors is a must-try for you!
