Details
L'Atypic is a great name for this unique blend of biodynamically farmed Malbec and Cabernet Franc - a combination that no one else does. Why not then, hey? Matured in concrete vats, it's a deliciously bright and purple-fruited red wine of pithy freshness and loads of ripe fruit. It's lush, but medium bodied, with so much charm and life.

Bordeaux is a giant French wine region that produces only a little bit less wine than the whole of New Zealand combined. So, for a small producer like Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours to stand out in such a mega region, it needs to be special. And this small, artisan estate feels like an ocean apart from the big business world. Set on a hill overlooking the Gironde estuary, the vines here are farmed biodynamically, the wines made with wild yeasts, no filtration or fining, very little new oak and minimal sulphur additions. The resulting wines are some of the most lively reds that Bordeaux can produce (and at very fair prices).

Pairing guide
This red may be proudly French, but we can't throw off the Iberian vibes. If there’s one dish we’d recommend pairing with this Malbec blend it would be Spanish albondigas meatballs, served in a rich tomato sauce. However, the possibilities don’t end there… not by a long shot! It’s also superb with patatas bravas (in fact, most fried or roast potato dishes will work very well), leg of lamb, grilled pork, duck legs in gravy, and hamburgers. Veggie lentil burgers are a top pairing, as are stuffed capsicum peppers, mushrooms, and even fondue!

Wine region
Bordeaux, France
Bordeaux is a wine region located in southwestern France, known for producing some of the world's most coveted and expensive wines. The main takeaway is that Bordeaux wines are a blend of grape varieties. Sometimes called noble varieties, this includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère. This ‘Bordeaux blend’ style is emulated worldwide from Australia to South America! Key regions can be divided into two areas, the Left Bank and the Right Bank. The Left Bank includes Médoc, comprised of sub-regions - Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, and Margaux. These wines are Cabernet Sauvignon dominant with serious tannin structure for the long term. The Right Bank is known for softer wines made of Merlot. The top right-bank area is Pomerol, home to the iconic Château Pétrus with honourable mentions to Saint-Emilion and Fronsac.
