Details
Modern Merlot blends from Bordeaux can be chunky things, but this takes a more savoury route. It's still packed with bold blackcurrant flavour, but with leather, lead pencils and a bit of smoky meat complexity, with serious tannins to finish it all off. Serious, but very lively, modern Merlot.
Bordeaux is a giant French wine region that produces only a little bit less wine than the whole of New Zealand combined. So, for a small producer like Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours to stand out in such a mega region, it needs to be special. And this small, artisan estate feels like an ocean apart from the big business world. Set on a hill overlooking the Gironde estuary, the vines here are farmed biodynamically, the wines made with wild yeasts, no filtration or fining, very little new oak and minimal sulphur additions. The resulting wines are some of the most lively reds that Bordeaux can produce (and at very fair prices).

Pairing guide
When you're sipping on an earthy and savoury Bordeaux classic comfort food is where it’s at. This bold, red-fruited beauty is made for juicy ribeye or sirloin steaks (extra points for peppercorn sauce), slow-roasted lamb, or a proper Sunday roast with all the gravy-soaked trimmings. It’s also spot-on with earthy dishes - think wild mushroom risottos, garlicky potatoes, or rich European stews like boeuf bourguignon, goulash, or coq au vin.

Wine region

Bordeaux, France
Bordeaux is a wine region located in southwestern France, known for producing some of the world's most coveted and expensive wines. The main takeaway is that Bordeaux wines are a blend of grape varieties. Sometimes called noble varieties, this includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère. This ‘Bordeaux blend’ style is emulated worldwide from Australia to South America!
Key regions can be divided into two areas, the Left Bank and the Right Bank. The Left Bank includes Médoc, comprised of sub-regions - Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, and Margaux. These wines are Cabernet Sauvignon dominant with serious tannin structure for the long term. The Right Bank is known for softer wines made of Merlot. The top right-bank area is Pomerol, home to the iconic Château Pétrus with honourable mentions to Saint-Emilion and Fronsac.
