Details
The 2016 vintage is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The wine was aged in 80% new French oak so the extra couple of years in bottle has helped this settle down. The oak and spice is still evident but behind all that is a beautiful layer of dark black fruit and balanced tannin.

Château Léoville Poyferré is a true icon in Bordeaux's Saint-Julien appellation, crafting some of the most elegant and approachable wines in the Médoc. A second growth classed wine (basically really good) from the original 1855 classification, this estate carries a rich history dating back to 1638, but don’t let its old roots fool you—Léoville Poyferré is all about balancing tradition with innovation. Under the careful stewardship of the Cuvelier family since 1920, the estate has embraced modern winemaking techniques while preserving its classic character. The vineyards, predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (plus a little Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc), benefit from Saint-Julien’s gravelly soils, which lend structure and complexity to the wines. These wines have been aged carefully in Bordeaux for the last few years and are only available in extremely short supply.

Pairing guide
Château Léoville Poyferré have taken opulence to the Nth degree with this deeply flavourful, complex, and yet utterly drinkable Cabernet Blend, which effortlessly captures the finest features of this world-beating varietal. As for food pairing, we love this wine with the luxurious flavours of truffle, wild mushrooms, and game meats like venison. However, it’s just as good with a dish of steak and chips, will work amazingly well with a blue cheese souffle, and is a great choice for festive potato dishes cooked in duck fat.

Wine region
Bordeaux, France
Bordeaux is a wine region located in southwestern France, known for producing some of the world's most coveted and expensive wines. The main takeaway is that Bordeaux wines are a blend of grape varieties. Sometimes called noble varieties, this includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère. This ‘Bordeaux blend’ style is emulated worldwide from Australia to South America! Key regions can be divided into two areas, the Left Bank and the Right Bank. The Left Bank includes Médoc, comprised of sub-regions - Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, and Margaux. These wines are Cabernet Sauvignon dominant with serious tannin structure for the long term. The Right Bank is known for softer wines made of Merlot. The top right-bank area is Pomerol, home to the iconic Château Pétrus with honourable mentions to Saint-Emilion and Fronsac.
