Details
Barossa Semillon has always been underrated, but IYKYK, and the ‘Salvis Gratia’ from Chaffey Bros hits the spot. Made from the Madeira Clone, or pink-hued clone of this grape, the result is a delicate wine with lemon curd, a touch of hay and balanced acidity.
The Chaffey Bros are in fact brothers-in-law - Daniel Chaffey Hartwig and Theo Engela are the latest generation of the Chaffey family to ply their vinous trade in Australia. The name is based on their ancestors, the original Chaffey brothers, who were Canadian hydro engineers who arrived in Australia in 1886 and proceeded (along with a number of their descendants) to make an indelible mark on the Australian wine landscape. Their ethos is simple - present the vinous power, splendour and richness of the Barossa and Eden Valleys in a modern and digestible manner. So, their handmade, minimal-intervention wines come from individual parcels of low-yielding vineyards spread across the region. They are akin to wine-focussed parfumiers - discovering delicate aromatics, born from old vines, but mixed with blenders and storytellers. All in all, they're a more than welcome addition to the South Australian wine scene.

Pairing guide
Textural and refined, Salvis Gratia showcases the depth and freshness of old-vine Barossa Semillon, with citrus zest, beeswax, and a subtle nutty richness. Its crisp acidity and layered palate make it an ideal partner for seafood like grilled barramundi, scallops in beurre blanc, or fish and chips with a squeeze of lemon. It also works beautifully with creamy chicken dishes, roast turkey, or spring vegetable risotto. For lighter fare, try it with fresh green salads, goat cheese, or even a sushi platter—the wine’s bright lift keeps everything fresh and balanced.
