Details
Don't let the lower alcohol fool you with this Primitivo; it still packs a punch. With dried fruit, violets, a touch of lavender and sweet spices, this wine is great just to smell, yet after the first sip, you'll be even more hooked on this delightful red. The palate really opens up with sultanas and prunes, chewy tannins and plenty of body.

The story of Cantine Ermes and its label, Casaponte, begins not with a wealthy family or a grand estate, but with an earthquake. On a January night in 1968, a devastating earthquake tore through the Belìce Valley in western Sicily, destroying entire towns and displacing thousands of people. Thirty years later, a group of determined local grape growers decided to rebuild something meaningful from that same wounded land, founding Cantine Ermes in 1998 with a shared dream of creating a world-class cooperative winery. It is one of the great comeback stories in Italian wine, and today the cooperative has grown to over 2,500 members. The wines are rooted firmly in Sicily's remarkable cast of indigenous varieties like Nero d'Avola, Grillo, Catarratto and Nerello Mascalese, grapes that have thrived for centuries under the island's fierce Mediterranean sun. Aside from these Sicilian varieties, what attracted the Good Pair Days team to Cantine Ermes was the ability to source varieties from across Italy, whether classic Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio or lesser-known varieties like Pecorino and Susumaniello.

Pairing guide
This is a rich, aromatic and wonderfully indulgent red with a dried fruit and sweet spice character that rewards bold, satisfying food. Slow-braised lamb shoulder with roasted root vegetables, a hearty beef and mushroom ragu on pappardelle or some smoky BBQ pork ribs are all excellent starting points that match the wine's sultana, prune and chewy tannin depth beautifully. That lovely floral lift of violet and lavender also makes it a surprisingly elegant companion for a duck confit with roasted figs, a spiced lamb tagine with dried fruit and almonds or a rich wild boar and herb ragù. For something more relaxed, an aged hard cheese like a good pecorino or a sharp vintage cheddar alongside some dark chocolate is a deeply satisfying way to let this aromatic and generous Primitivo show everything it has to offer.

Wine region
Puglia, Italy
Puglia is a wine region in the "heel" of Italy that is known for its red, white, and rosé wines. The full-bodied red wines are often made with Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, while the whites are usually made with Verdeca and Fiano grapes. Puglia has a hot, sunny climate which helps the grapes ripen fully and gives the wines a rich flavour. The region is also home to some unique grape varieties, like Nero di Troia and Bombino Nero. So, if you're a fan of Italian wine, definitely give Puglia a try! Historically Puglia has been better known for its quantity of wine over its quality. But thanks to a number of quality-focused producers, the region is turning that narrative around.
