Details
Cantine Ermes have created a great Nero D'Avola for Good Pair Days, with plenty of Sicilian flair. With a deep colour, cherry cola and plenty of spice, this Nero hits the spot. The palate opens up with more cherry notes, plums and trademark spice and tannin structure.

The story of Cantine Ermes and its label, Casaponte, begins not with a wealthy family or a grand estate, but with an earthquake. On a January night in 1968, a devastating earthquake tore through the Belìce Valley in western Sicily, destroying entire towns and displacing thousands of people. Thirty years later, a group of determined local grape growers decided to rebuild something meaningful from that same wounded land, founding Cantine Ermes in 1998 with a shared dream of creating a world-class cooperative winery. It is one of the great comeback stories in Italian wine, and today the cooperative has grown to over 2,500 members. The wines are rooted firmly in Sicily's remarkable cast of indigenous varieties like Nero d'Avola, Grillo, Catarratto and Nerello Mascalese, grapes that have thrived for centuries under the island's fierce Mediterranean sun. Aside from these Sicilian varieties, what attracted the Good Pair Days team to Cantine Ermes was the ability to source varieties from across Italy, whether classic Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio or lesser-known varieties like Pecorino and Susumaniello.

Pairing guide
This is a deeply coloured, spice-driven Sicilian red with plenty of character and a generous fruit profile that loves bold, flavourful food. The cherry cola, plum and spice character makes it a natural with slow-braised lamb, a hearty beef and tomato ragu on pappardelle or a classic Sicilian-style caponata with good pasta alongside it. Those trademark firm tannins also make it a wonderful companion for a wood-fired pizza loaded with spicy salami and roasted vegetables, a slow-roasted pork shoulder with herbs and garlic or a chargrilled sausage and lentil stew. For something more relaxed, an aged pecorino or a good sharp provolone alongside some good olives, cured meats and fresh ciabatta is a beautifully simple pairing that lets this characterful and very Sicilian red do all the talking.

Sicily, Italy
Sicily is a productive island located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the southern coast of Italy. The island has a varied landscape, with low coastal plains to hills and even active volcanic mountains. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Disease pressure is low thanks to drying coastal breezes making the region ideal for organic farming practices. The soils are volcanic, sandy, and clay. Sicily can be divided into three wine regions, including the volcanic Etna DOC on the eastern side of the island, known for its red wines made from the Nerello Mascalese grape. The Marsala DOC on the island's western side is known for its fortified wines. The remaining Southeast of the Island produces a range of wines, notably Frappato and Nero d’Avola.
