Details
Macho by name and Macho by nature, this Monastrell (AKA Mourvèdre or Mataro) grows in dry vineyards in the highlands of Jumilla, producing a juicy red & black-berried Macho Man of a wine. The palate is rich and smooth, with sweet ripe fruit layered with spice, hints of orange zest, and savoury liquorice on top of leather notes from bottle age. Textural and chewy, finishes with dusty tannins. Wowza!
In the last decade, modern Spanish winery Casa Rojo has made a name for itself internationally, thanks to its award-winning wines of exceptional quality, as well as the brilliant, colourful artistic labels and witty names. This creative spirit imbues the wines as well as the packaging; choosing to work not just in one region, but across Spain, currently producing wines from seven different areas. In each of these carefully-chosen regions, the emphasis is on native grape varieties, limited production and capturing the essence of the particular terroir. Casa Rojo was founded in 2010 by husband and wife team José Luis Gómez and Laura Muñoz, the oenologists and directors of Casa Rojo. Their passion for the world of wine led them to embark on a wine tour of Spain with the goal of representing the most important Spanish terroirs and native grape varieties. A mixture of modernity and respect for tradition informs the decision-making, and so far is being met with success and absolutely delicious wines!

Pairing guide
All those robust tannins and deep fruitfulness in this gorgeous Monastrell make for a fine food-pairing wine, and we’ve had no shortage of fun picking out the best matches for this bottle. We reckon it’s a great pairing for barbecued hunks of beef and lamb, especially racks of ribs, chops and fattier cuts of steak. Homemade pizza is always a great choice with Monastrell, as is a meaty paella or other similar rice dishes, bean casseroles and roasted Mediterranean vegetables. Nice!

Wine region

Jumilla, Spain
Despite its hot and harsh conditions, Jumilla has a long history of wine production, with evidence of vine cultivation dating back to the ancient Roman Empire. The Jumilla wine region is located in the southeast of Spain, in the province of Murcia (2.5 hours drive South of Valencia). Jumilla is hot and dry! Thankfully, the high lime content of the soils retains the necessary moisture for often unirrigated vines; the other saving grace is the elevation between 400-800m – offering cool evening respite for the vines. The region is particularly famous for its powerful and rich red wines such as Monastrell and international varieties Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. White varieties like Airen, Macabeo, Pedro Ximénez and Malvasia are also worth a look!
