Details
Frappello marries up two of the delicious indigenous Sicilian red grapes, Frappato and Nerello Mascalese, that we would love to see more of outside of Italy. It's a round, joyous and pretty, light-to-medium-bodied wine of redcurrant and mulberry fruit that explodes in your mouth like a raspberry lolly (but savoury). What a delight.
Sicily can feel like frontier wine country sometimes, with the hot dry summers and the wildness of one of Europe's most active volcanoes adding all sorts of liveliness that is often reflected in the wines. The Caruso & Minini story also has a sense of adventure: the Caruso family, who've grown grapes in Sicily for generations, partnered with the Minini family, wine traders and marketers from northern Italy, to do something cool. Today, Nino Caruso's granddaughters, Rosanna and Giovanna, run things, along with Giovanna's husband, Andrea, a former pharmacist from Piedmont who swore he'd never work with his wife or father-in-law. That didn't quite go to plan, and they all make modern, seriously cool (and typically organic) wine in a revitalised, 1904-founded winery situated in Marsala, on Sicily's western edge.

Pairing guide
This fascinating red blend of the great Sicilian local varieties is anything but a big red, and instead it's so polished and fruity (without being sweet) that it could be a great red wine for oily, strong fish like mackerel or tuna. Charcuterie is a wonderful contrast here too, and we love this with zucchini fritters, as the fruit is a wonderful contrast to the fried textures. Finally, don't be afraid to serve this wine a little chilled; it will work just about any way you like!

Sicily, Italy
Sicily is a productive island located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the southern coast of Italy.
The island has a varied landscape, with low coastal plains to hills and even active volcanic mountains. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Disease pressure is low thanks to drying coastal breezes making the region ideal for organic farming practices. The soils are volcanic, sandy, and clay.
Sicily can be divided into three wine regions, including the volcanic Etna DOC on the eastern side of the island, known for its red wines made from the Nerello Mascalese grape. The Marsala DOC on the island's western side is known for its fortified wines. The remaining Southeast of the Island produces a range of wines, notably Frappato and Nero d’Avola.
