Details
Alright, so you've never heard of Moristel? I don't blame you....neither had I until I tasted this.
But now I wish I could find more! The colour is a vivid, bright ruby red in the glass and the fruit flavours follow through this vein - it's a juicy mix of sour rhubarb, red plum, red cherry and rose petals.
From the dramatic Pyrenees mountains (Bodegas Pirineos - 'the Pyrenees cellar'), this shows off a cool, tangy palate, with plenty of refreshing acidity and a nice, even texture. Very refreshing and more-ish. Moristel. More-ish.
Close your eyes for a moment, and imagine you’re standing among the looming peaks of the Pyrenees mountain range - that great jagged ridge that carves its way through southern Europe. This is exactly the landscape that has inspired and informed the creation of Bodegas Pirineos, a thrilling new Spanish winery bringing lesser-known local varietals to the tables of quality wine fans worldwide. Frankly, we couldn’t be happier. Bodegas Pirineos is a real labour of love, and is headed by a small group of dedicated vintners determined to show off Spain’s incredible range and variety, and introduce wine lovers to styles they’d possibly never otherwise experience. Ripened under the blazing Spanish sunshine, tempered by mountain winds, and fed by the mineral-rich soils of this beautiful part of the world, these are Spanish wines which are the very essence of their environment. With a committed low-intervention approach to viticulture, you’re able to indulge in flavours and aromas which are as eye-opening as they are authentic. We’ve no doubt we’ll be hearing plenty more from Bodegas Pirineos in the near future, and that can only be a great thing. Alright, so you've never heard of Moristel? Pairing guide
This Spanish red wine varietal is definitely on the lesser-known end of the spectrum for most wine fans. However, it’s one which most locals will swear as being a truly superb food pairing wine, which works with a surprisingly broad number of ingredients. On the one hand, this is a wine that simply adores being matched with lamb dishes. With its deep dark fruit flavours, it’s going to be incredible with lamb stews, Moroccan tagines, baked lamb shanks and gravy, and pretty much anything else involving this succulent meat. On the other, it’s also a real winner with meaty fish dishes, especially those which involve salmon, tuna, or swordfish, baked with lots of veggies. Yum!

Wine region

Somontano, Spain
Somontano is a wine region located in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains in northeast Spain. Here you’ll find a diversity of soil types, including limestone, clay, and sand, as well as a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The top wine styles produced in Somontano include red wines made from the Garnacha and Tempranillo grape varieties, as well as white wines made from the Macabeo and Chardonnay grape varieties. Some more daring winemakers in Somontano are known to blend indigenous Spanish grape varieties such as Moristel and Parraleta with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to make distinctive wines that speak of the region. A great example of the willingness of local winemakers to experiment to tell stories through wine. The top sub-regions of Somontano include Barbastro and Alquézar, known for rich, brooding and mineral driven red wines, as well as fresh and aromatic white wines.
