Details
Believed to be the great-grandkid of Pinot Noir, Shiraz can often be light and fragrant, especially early-picked versions from cool-climate regions in Victoria. This minimal intervention wine from Bobar is the perfect embodiment of this style; pale in colour, with very pretty red fruits, it’s soft, light-bodied, juicy and crunchy from bright acidity, and incredibly Pinot-like in character. Barossa Valley this ain't! Chill it, smash it, love it!
A short drive from the city of Melbourne is the region of Yarra Valley. With fluctuating elevations, staggered rainfall, windy spots and varied soil types, it is exceptionally hard to box the region into producing a single style or a single grape as the textbook Yarra Valley expression. Enter Sally and Tom Belford to make the tapestry of the region even more rich and diverse. The Belfords lean towards low intervention styles and are considered pioneers of the natural wine movement in the Yarra Valley. Located in Yarra Glen they endeavour to make wines that express their sites as best as possible without leaving any fingerprints. The Bobar wines are very much built on traditional, simple winemaking methods; natural yeasts, foot treading, and old oak. All their wines are made sustainably, and they are not fined nor filtered. Sulphur is sometimes used at bottling but otherwise this is a project to capture the site and vintage in the bottle without any additions. Bobar wines are made simply, but with precision, intent and craft.
