Details
Definitely a wine to throw in the decanter. Classically Australian in character, yet as it's Malbec, the fruit character is a bit of a sidestep from the anticipation of Cabernet or Shiraz. Undergrowth characters such as wet rocks, soil and mossy notes open up into more woody notes; layers of vanilla, mocha, coffee bean - with an inherently deep core of blackberry fruit. No shortage of high quality oak here, its tannins are full but chocolatey.
Meet 'Best Lot', the new brainchild of incredibly diverse winemaker, thinker and barrel importer, Richard Bate (of Karatta winery fame) 'Best Lot' is exactly as the name suggests, a wine venture with to take fruit from the best lots, and make the best wine from it. The project focusses solely around Malbec, sourced from the best parcels of fruit Richard can get his hands on, as long as it is the absolute best fruit Regardless of where the fruit's from, in the winery you can expect to see only native yeasts at play and minimal filtering. Malbec is a varietal that can behave in many ways, particularly in the winery where it's a winemakers dream. Richard Bate goes 'all out' in his intention to create a benchmark Malbec, looking for muscle and shape, generosity of flavour yet classic sophistication and elegance. The inaugural release from the 2018 vintage is sourced from select old vineyards from three different regions across South Australia: Robe, Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale. Pairing guide
Fruity, complex, and bursting with character, this Malbec is the perfect reminder of how this varietal became such a world-beating wine style. There’s no getting away from the fact that this really is a meat lover’s wine - it’s ideal with darker meats, game, and exotic meats like kangaroo, bison, and venison, and will work just as well with all your barbecue favourites, from ribs to steaks, chops, and burgers. Vegetarians need not panic, however; we really enjoyed this wine with mushroom and bean chilli, veggie burritos, and portobello mushrooms, and it’s also a winner with your best homemade mac ‘n’ cheese, too!

Wine region

Robe, Australia
Robe is a sub-region of the larger Limestone Coast wine region of South Australia and is known for producing high-quality wines. The region has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild winters, which makes it ideal for growing grapes. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, beautiful beaches, and charming towns. The region is best known for its crisp and refreshing white wines that pair particularly well with a bounty of fresh local seafood. But it's also gained a reputation for its bold and flavorful red wines. Some of the grape varieties commonly grown in the Robe wine region include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz.
