Details
Semillon isn't normally a popular grape in the NSW Hilltops region (it's a great spot for cherries FWIW), but this Ballinaclash white breaks the rules. There's a riot of citrus and melon fruit flavours on a light and crisp, refreshing palate, all making for a wine that is both generous and thirst-quenching.
Origin: Probably Bordeaux, in Eastern France. But now found most places. Mainly Grown In: Bordeaux but locally - Hunter Valley, Margaret River and the Barossa Valley. Key Facts: Semillon is a white grape responsible for Australia's most recognisable white wine (although you may have never tried it), France's greatest dessert wine, and is planted pretty much all over the world. Semillon is an amazing variety, but so often it is used to blend with other grapes (like its best friend, Sauvignon Blanc), making it a perennial bridesmaid. Semillon can make amazing chameleon-like wines that start off tart and zesty, all limes and apples, only to become rich, toasty and amazingly complex as the wines age (and the best wines can age for decades!). Fun Fact: Semillon has, in the past 200 years, been the most planted grape in South Africa (now only 1% of vineyards), the most planted grape in Chile (now about 2%), and is currently forging a path in Argentina. Perhaps one day it'll get the respect it deserves?

Pairing guide
Young and juicy Semillon like this one offers up so much easy joy for pairing versatility. We especially enjoyed this deliciously upfront and citrussy wine with a lovely green salad, especially with some avocado and grilled nuts. We also love this wine with simple pasta dishes of zucchini, green olives and chopped herbs, and it’s also going to be lovely with richer seafood and fish dishes, too. Roast loin of pork, chicken thighs in mustard and cream sauce, soft and creamy cheeses and homemade pate will also provide excellent matches.
