Details
The Mullany family at Ballinaclash have a knack for making fruit-forward and lush wines from their vineyards in the NSW Hilltops, and this plump and juicy Merlot is a real riot of red fruit. It's round and squishy, but don't think this is a nothing red wine - instead, there's a load of red and purple fruit joy and some nice finessed tannins with an edge of the spicy hedgerow Merlot characters too.
Origin: It’s believed that the first wines made were in the Médoc region, in the west of France. Mainly Grown In: France leads the way here, with Bordeaux the big one. Also California, South Australia, central and northern Italy, plus Argentina. Key Facts: No matter how mer-little you know about wine, chances are you’ve heard of Merlot (pronounced “Mer-low”). Merlot is like a Golden Retriever; dependable (it ripens reliably well), lovable (especially for its chocolatey and soft plummy flavours), and able to get along with pretty much everyone (a champion in some of the most prized blends on the planet). Merlot is so approachable and smooth that it is often described as tasting “velvety”. Not sure when you last licked some velvet, but we did, and the Merlot definitely tasted much better than velvet. However, velvety is a fair way to describe the soft cushion-like comfort of how Merlot rolls across the palate — yum! Fun Fact: Because Merlot wine is so sensitive to light, Merlot-based wines tinge orange on the rim. The orange rim is the telltale sign of Merlot vs. Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pairing guide
This gorgeously smooth Merlot from Ballinaclash is a delightfully juicy wine, bursting with all those hedgerow and spice flavours we know and love from this varietal. As such, it loves being paired with rich, fatty meats which go well with berry sauces, especially duck and lamb, and loves a bit of sweet ‘n’ sour, too - so give it a try with Chinese-style duck or pork dishes. Braised short ribs, Moroccan lamb and apricots, chicken stews and tagines, fennel sausages, mac ‘n’ cheese… this food-friendly wine can stand up to all these classic dishes, and many, many more besides!
