Details
Made from a smorgasbord of weird and wonderful grape varieties including Saborinho, Agronomica, Aragones, Touriga Nacional and many others, this beautiful rosé has a little x-factor to it that can only come from grapegrowing at the fringes. This is such a delightful pink wine too, but with all sorts of unusual nuances. Almonds, pink strawberries, watermelon and that saline tang. Dry, textural and seriously engaging rosé to discover.
Set on the island of Pico, part of the Azores island chain, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores Wine Co. is one of the most fascinating wine projects we've seen in ages! Founded in 2010 by winemaker António Maçanita, this label started out as a mission to preserve some of the unique indigenous grape varieties found on the island and then morphed into a celebration of the unique local vineyards. Calling these plots vineyards is a loose term, as the vines grow in the crevices of the volcano between 50-300m from the sea with salt spray a constant presence. These plots are co-planted with a smorgasbord of un-defined varieties, and the area boasts a grapegrowing history of this area tracing back to the 1500s. Call it the power of suggestion, but you can taste a certain saline tang in all of the beautiful, unique wines made on the island.

Pairing guide
We haven’t tried many wines from the beautiful Azores island, but if this release is anything to go by, we’re sure to keep our eye out for more! It’s a stunning pink wine with a delicious set of cherry and strawberry flavours - perfect for sipping alongside light salads, salty cheeses and dishes which bring together summer fruits and savoury ingredients in perfect harmony. Salads featuring cherries or raspberry vinaigrette will work perfectly, as will grilled pork sausages with caramelised onion chutney, Cajun-style chicken or peri peri, and oily fish like barbecued sardines. Capers, green olives and halloumi will work a treat, and it’s also great with couscous with fresh coriander, pomegranate seeds and feta.
