Details
This is one imposing Chilean red. Hello, big-time Chilean wine! Dark, brooding, heavy with berry fruits, Christmas cake and spice - it's a powerhouse red wine with tannins and flavour for days. Yet there's also a mocha richness here, that just rounds off the edges and makes for a big mouthful of full-bodied flavour that's really rather smooth and enticing.

In the Chilean wine world, Álvaro Espinoza is something of a modern hero. Famously one of the first winemakers in Chile to correctly identify and bottle a local Carménère, Espinoza has become an important figure in South American wine, particularly as one of the first to bring biodynamic grapegrowing to Chile. The scope for Antiyal, however, is smaller. In 1996, Espinoza planted a few hectares around his family home in the Maipo Valley. From the start, this was a passion project, with biodynamic farming and a focus on total ecology as a key tenet. Picture goats roaming through a lush oasis with vineyards just part of the farm's mix. The wines here are next-level, too, especially the Carménère, which is famously powerful and detailed, only constrained by seriously low crops.

Pairing guide
A good bottle of Carménère is always a great idea, not least when there’s boldly-flavoured and deeply savoury dishes on the table. This big, boisterous red from Antiyal is a great choice for pairing with barbecued red meats, classic Latin American dishes like asado, churrasco and grilled beef or lamb skewers, as well as with dishes making a star ingredient of polenta, black beans and puy lentils. Traditional meat and vegetable stews, game meats like rabbit and ‘roo, strong cheeses and mushroom ragu will also work brilliantly.
