Details
The Rocca's don't make much Barbera, but going by this bottle, they probably should! No oak here, bottled early in order to keep everything vibrant and fresh. The wine is crammed to the brim with fleshy dark plums, blueberries, violet and subtle herbs. A touch of tar and pepper on the finish combine with some refreshing acidity to keep things perky.

To appreciate the wines of Albino Rocca it’s helpful to understand the back story to the producer. Early on, in the 1940s, Albino Rocca’s grandfather, Giacomo, paved the way by turning the family vineyard in Barbaresco into a well-regarded source of fruit for local winemakers. Inspired by the wines that were made from his fruit, Giacomo began to ferment a little wine himself. Now the Rocca family have collected more amazing vineyards and they are no longer selling their fruit or wines just locally, but throughout the world. Initially focussed on Nebbiolo, Barbaresco’s greatest expression, they have added in Barbera and Dolcetto into their annual bottlings also. In the vineyards they have been reducing the use of herbicides and pesticides with leanings towards organics, whilst also improving winemaking methods and how the wines are aged. The preference is for huge oak barrels which maintain the purity of fruit and help keep the expression of the fruit and the vineyard focussed.

Pairing guide
We love a good bottle of Barbera here at Good Pair Days, and this bottle from Albino Rocca ticks all the right boxes with real style, and mountains of character! Rich and intense, it needs to be paired with similarly fully-flavoured foods. Dark meats like beef, game, and especially wild boar are definitely going to hit the spot, and anything featuring wild mushrooms is a real winner. Blue cheeses, and high-tannin foods like roasted root vegetables and braised greens are also brilliant choices for this vino!

Wine region
Piedmont, Italy
The Piedmont wine region in Italy is a magical place known for producing world-class wines. The region is bordered by the Alps to the north and the Apennine Mountains to the south, and it is characterized by rolling hills and a diverse landscape. The climate in Piedmont is generally cool and wet, with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. This climate is well-suited to grape growing offering slow and steady ripening conditions which lead to high-quality and expressive wines. Piedmont is most praised for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, which are made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barbera and Dolcetto are other celebrated reds of the region, and as for its white wines, Arneis, Moscato d'Asti and the rare Nascetta. Piedmont is also famous for its flavorful truffles, often used in local dishes, and pair beautiful with its regional wines.
