Details
This wine comes from the Flaxman Valley, and is one of the highest sites in the Eden Valley ranges. Two vineyards create this wine - the Powell Home block, and a vineyard belonging to their neighbour! The wine is stunning - detailed and yet medium bodied, lithe and wonderful, with notes of olive, meat, violet and salt. Plenty of dark fruit and black pepper. Wonderful stuff - the soul of the Barossa.

The name Powell is synonymous with high quality Barossan wine. Dave Powell, a larger than life character who embodied the wines he made - big, bold and brash - made his name by creating a wine brand called Torbreck, named after a place in Scotland where he met the woman who would become his wife. The wines were inspired by the 'denser' end of the wine spectrum, and yet by the elegance and detail of the red wines of the Rhone Valley. After leaving that winery behind and setting off on a new journey making wine with his son Callum Powell, his influence in the region is still powerful. These wines however are purely the work of Callum, and tread a different path, at least in the result, but the approach is the same - fastidious, conscientious and focussed. Callum has worked harvest at numerous wineries across South Australia and the world, and still makes wine with his dad under the label Powell and Sons. His own project, Agricola, showcases the incredible old vines of the Barossa, albeit at lower alcohol levels and with more detail and finesse than is seen in many other places. These are very special wines, made by someone who has generational knowledge of the vines. Quite something.

Pairing guide
Elegant yet bold, complex yet utterly delightful on the palate, this Shiraz from Agricola truly highlights the sheer levels of distinction this classic Aussie style can achieve. When it comes to food pairing, we love this wine with decadent dishes of fillet steak and truffle, wild mushroom and game meats, and tempting offal dishes such as steak and kidney, chicken liver pâté, and osso bucco or guinea fowl. Eggplant parmigiano, Tuscan bean stews, and ratatouille with a cheesy gratin would all make for perfect veggie pairings.
