Details
The wine originates in the Grigg vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley, quite high up in the Adelaide Hills. The vines were planted in 1997 and are really producing some high quality fruit now. This is an incredibly good wine, made from a single vineyard of high quality Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills. It leads with smoky tree fruit, a touch of citrus oil and then is pushed into overdrive by the acidity and the sensation of salt and minerals on the palate - very zesty and fresh.
Col McBryde and his partner Jennie Gardiner, winemakers and owners of Adelina (as well as another of our favourite labels, Some Young Punks), are a switched-on wine power couple. As well as making great wines on the regular, they're always looking out for quality fruit that they can turn into a future release. Having worked with small batches of Chardonnay for a number of years, although, until now, nothing had quite made the grade to be released under the Adelina label. Finally, they've found a first-rate grower (with the right postcode) that they can work with and thus the first Adelina Chardonnay has been born! Although based in the Clare Valley, set amongst one of the most historically relevant winery and vineyards in Australia, they also work with a very small group of growers in Clare and the Adelaide Hills whom grow fruit for their non-estate wines. The winery is rustic in a sense of mod-cons and mechanisation, where the most elaborate piece of equipment would be the coffee machine! Not a fan of the 'obvious' style of Australian Shiraz which took off in the 90s, McBryde’s aim is to produce wines that are not immediately accessible, but instead seductive....you need to hunt for the different flavours and then savour in them. His skills are impressive, as are the entire range of wines. Great stuff.

Pairing guide
Exciting things are happening with Aussie Chardonnay, as this striking and highly drinkable bottle from Adelina shows perfectly. This wine is going to really please when it comes to serving it with your dinner, and we’d love to see it accompanying some really nice fresh fish, grilled to perfection on a barbecue, or steamed and slathered in butter and served with some greens. It’s also a top pairing for crab and prawns, and it’s got just enough zest and zing to stand up against some sushi and sashimi, too. Lastly, this Chardonnay is really vegetable-friendly, too, so don’t hesitate to bring it out for your vegetarian risottos, pasta dishes, and terrines.

Wine region

Adelaide Hills, Australia
The Adelaide Hills wine region, located in South Australia's Mount Lofty Ranges
of South Australia is characterised by its high altitude, cool climate, and diverse soils, which all contribute to the unique terroir that produces elegant, complex, and expressive wines. The region's altitude ranges from 400 to 700 meters above sea level, creating a cooler climate than other wine regions in South Australia. The cool temperatures slow down the ripening process of the grapes, resulting in wines with high acidity, delicate aromatics, and elegant flavours. Top sub-regions are Lenswood, Piccadilly Valley, and Basket Range, each with unique microclimates and diverse soil types that produce singular wine styles, the highlights are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a whole lot more!
