Details
So what is a Hybrid Whisk(e)y anyway? In the USA and Ireland they call it whiskey, whereas in Scotland they write whisky. Both are correct. And this is a happy marriage of all of those traditions. Scotch meets Bourbon meets Australia. Round malted flavours, rich sherry characters and toasty oak bamboozle and seduce. Rich and oily, smooth and fruity. It's a dram well worth tasting.
Australian distilling is seen a new-wave thing these days. But our alcohol industry was built on distillation - beer and wine came much later! 23rd St Distillery is the essence of that history. First built in 1914 in Renmark in the Riverland in SA, it was home to famous wine brands such as Chateau Tanunda, Renmano and Hardy's. After hard times, it closed in 2004, only to be reborn in 2016! There are three stills on site, and whilst not originally from the area, they are over 100 years old themselves. They are the heart of the distillery, producing the range of gin, whisky, vodka, brandy and more! The site now houses a great restaurant and outdoor area, drawing people from far and wide. Well worth a visit if you ever find yourself in the area, but just as worthwhile to taste through the range of this new (old?) distillery!
