Say it With Shiraz
Australia's fave red grape for a reason!
Shiraz may be the poster boy for red wine. Even our newby wine friends know what it is and that it packs a punch. Full of fruit but savoury too, it has smoky overtones with plenty of pepper; it handles oak well and ages splendidly. The grape is, without a doubt, most famously from France and Australia. It’s named Shiraz in Australia, and Syrah in France - and the rest of the world too (and confusingly, it can also be in Australia too, when the winemaker wants to label it as a more elegant, fragrant white pepper-and-violet, savoury style!).
3 super Shiraz to try
In this special pack you'll enjoy: Wicks Estate 'CJ Wicks' Shiraz 2021 The Adelaide Hills is not strictly famous for Shiraz, but the best wines are wonderful medium bodied things. This is the top-shelf Shiraz from Wicks, and it's a carefully crafted red. There's a lovely blend of plush blackberry and ripe blue plum, along with some cool climate mint and pepper. Think of this like a half-and-half wine - both spicy and generous, all at once! J & J Wines 'Rivers Lane' Shiraz 2022 Rivers Lane is where you'll find the J & J Wines vineyard, so why not call your wine after it? This is a lovely, rich, and powerful organic Shiraz too. Matured using a mix of French and American oak, it's a luscious, robustly flavoured, super smooth Shiraz with acres of flavour and a finish that goes on for days. Eight at the Gate 'Single Vineyard' Shiraz 2022 There's no second-guessing with this Eight at the Gate Shiraz; it's a seriously luscious wine! Matured for almost three years in oak barrels, it's a beautifully chocolatey and generous red wine, but cut with a peppery spice too. Importantly, there are acres of cooked plum and chocolate powder with a warm and enveloping palate that swallows you up like a big bear hug of flavour.
Interesting to note
Shiraz first came into use largely from a simple Australianising of the grape name when the first cuttings were imported back in the 19th century.
