Grenache the working class hero

Grenache, also known as Garnacha, Garnatxa or even Cannonau, is a red grape that does so many different things, often without getting the love it deserves. It's your working-class hero of the red grape world. Notably, Grenache is also a variety that loves the warm weather, and can produce fruity, floral wines of delicacy or real powerhouses, depending on when the grapes are harvested. Always spicy and complex, it's one of the world's great red wines. Grenache, when turned into red wine, tends to deliver loads of red jubey fruits - think raspberries, red cherries and strawberries - and varying degrees of spice. Even in the lighter spectrum, the alcohol is generally high because it is a late-ripening grape, and the tannins are moderate. Can handle oak well, adding to depth and spice, but is comfortable without it.

With bright, vibrant fruit drive on the nose, with a nice whole bunch driven style, this wine is seriously slurpable. With a touch of confectionery, Haribo style red fruit along with some spice and fine tannin, you could chill this down in the heat of summer or drink beside a fireplace in the depths of winter.

Interesting to note

Grenache is one of the most widely planted red grape varieties in the world and can be made into rosé wines, single varietal reds, long-lived blends with Syrah/ Shiraz and Mourvèdre/ Mataro or Tempranillo, and also makes wonderful fortified wines. It’s such an all-rounder!
