Story

For anyone trying to start a new brewery, it can feel like being a tiny fish in a big pond. And Tiny Fish Brewing is definitely small, with just a few mates contract brewing beer without a taphouse or infrastructure behind them.

While this Adelaide brewing business might lack volume, it doesn't lack ambition, with eight beers in the range. Led by head brewer Brett Whiting and what is now six friends, this young crew of beer lovers has rolled out a pretty awesome range that spans everything from mid-strength strawberry sour to 8% Imperial IPA.

Oh, and the name? Well, Brett is not small, and with the surname of Whiting, he has always been called Fish by his mates. So Tiny Fish is just an excellent play for what is a heaps fun young beer brand on the up.

The crew also like the name for its fishing relatability - anyone who throws a line on a weekend ends up with just a few tiny fish to show for a whole day!

This Session Stout was the first beer to come out for Tiny Fish and it's a remarkably drinkable thing. At just 3.8%, it has an all-day appeal to it (that's perfect for fishing, incidentally) but doesn't lack flavour at all. It's chocolatey, with a little Coco-Pops vibe, although it's not crunchy - this brew is round and smooth, with lactose giving it a lovely creamy edge.

PAIRING GUIDE

The Tiny Fish Brew Co in Adelaide is churning out some seriously characterful beers, and this beautiful stout - packed full of deep, dark and seductive flavours - is right up there with the best of them. Like most stouts, this one is going to be fabulous with loads of different dishes. We reckon it’s probably best with slow-cooked red meats with a umami-rich sauce, grilled oysters and other seafood, and anything with plenty of earthy mushroom flavours. You’ll also get great results with coffee and chocolate cakes, or anything with dates and other dried fruits. Give it a try and see for yourself!
