Story
'Exquisite piss'. That's the label that the crew behind Sydney's The Grifter Brewing Co. stand behind, in a nod to the idea that it's ok to be serious about beer quality, but not to take yourself too seriously.
A staple of Marrickville in Sydney's Inner West, The Grifter Brewing Co. operation has clocked over a decade old and happily remains 100% independent and majority-owned by founders Glenn Wignall, Trent Evans, and Matt King.
You certainly can't miss the brewery, with the giant orange Grifter grain silo can (an Instagram smash that also helps minimise truck movements) out the front and the B-Corp logo on the website, all announcing their intentions and their commitment to taking a different route to sustainable beer production.
Notably, the trio still craft all their beers in-house, too, with a stated belief that every beer, from classics to "fruity wildcards," should leave you wanting another can of 'exquisite piss'.
Black Lager, also known as Schwarzbier ('black beer' in German), is an ancient style of beer that manages to be simultaneously sessionable yet with a darker edge, it's a beer that tastes like a northern hemisphere Christmas.
Brewed with a traditional noble hop dating back to the 1800s, this crisp lager with restrained chocolate and roasted flavours has a wonderful old-school feel, though with a sneaky balance that makes it really quite refreshing.

PAIRING GUIDE
Black lagers are a solid staple of the Eastern European beer scene, and we’re delighted to see a bit of Prague or Budapest coming to Australia via the efforts of this superb NSW brewery. When it comes to food pairing, you could stick to the classics and match this up with deeply savoury pork and paprika stew, cheesy pasta or bratwurst sausages and sauerkraut. However, we think you’d be missing a trick by not pairing this massively satisfying beer with seafood and shellfish, especially mussels in oyster sauce, grilled oysters in the half-shell or crab sandwiches. It’s also going to taste great with lamb chops, marinated tofu and portabello mushrooms - Delicious!
