Story

For NSW Central Coast-based home brewer Chris Benson and schoolmate Adam Klasterka, having their own brewery seemed like every beer-lover's pipe dream. So when they first attempted to open the Six String Brewing doors in 2010, it seemed like the stars had aligned.

Little did they know that due to some local bureaucracy, it would be a full three years before they could start selling their first brews. Thankfully, this story has a happy ending. The Six String star has been climbing higher ever since, and their brewery is like a ray of sunshine for Central Coast beer lovers starved of interesting brews.

More than just beer, there's music too. Chris loves playing guitar (the brand name gives that away), and the brewery rocks and rolls all day and night. Little wonder that the Six Strings beers feel just a bit more metal.

The Coastie Lager is arguably Chris & Adam's most famous beer, but the IPA range at Six String serves up the big hits, along with the sessionable TPA. Don't miss the seriously good non-beer hits (hello hard lemonade and ginger beer).

As the crew explain, this Pale Ale is a bit of a hybrid. You stir in some of the punchy American hoppy aromatics that offer so much fragrance, yet there is still some malty richness here as well and some classic passionfruit Aussie hop, making for a pretty well-balanced brew that just works.

From the kickoff, you can see some of that mix with how it smells - both grassy and a bit piney, but also veering into passionfruit and tropical fruit too. Plenty happening! It's moderately bitter, but not mouth-puckering (30 IBU, if we're getting into beer geekery), with a finish that is more clean than it is grainy.

Go on, just try and stop at one...

PAIRING GUIDE

We’ve been consistently impressed with the output of Six String Brewing – it’s a fast-growing NSW Central Coast institution, and one we just can’t get enough of. This pale ale is a real winner; all that hoppiness and crisp, refreshing character makes it a gorgeous beer to pair with the kind of Filipino food they showcase at their brewery restaurant, as well as Thai and Malaysian dishes that balance spicy, sweet and tangy flavours. Big, juicy prawns are going to work well here, and it’s also surprisingly good with pesto pasta dishes, peri-peri chicken and chips, grilled white fish and flatfish, and marinated tofu with peanuts and fresh herbs.
