Story
Philter's story starts, like so many good ones, with a backyard chat between mates. Neighbours Mick Neil and Stef Constantoulas, who both love beer and are fascinated by branding, saw an opportunity to make a beer brand that could be cool and make ultra-drinkable brews.
So the brand then kicked off in 2017, with none other than this XPA. From the start, the boys kicked with a unique brand vibe that blends a bit of 80s nostalgia (just check out the font) with an emphasis on all-day sessionability and more modern beer styles.
What started in that initial chat, as a backyard operation, has since grown into a state-of-the-art solar-powered brewery in an old yoghurt factory in Marrickville, complete with an awesome public bar that feels like the best of an 80s pub (just with better beers).
Meanwhile, Philter has now released over 30 beers and won a swag of brewing silverware in the process, including the Champion Australian Brewery at this year's ABA awards (aka the logies of Aussie beer).
This OG XPA from Philter managed to win a gold medal just months after release (and was the Champion Australian Pale Ale at the ABAs in 2025, 2024, 2018 and 2017), which shows you the boys got it right from the beginning.
It's a refreshing modern Aussie beer too, with a little of the pine and pineapple hop aromatics, but also a lovely gentle fullness, with just a little haze.

PAIRING GUIDE
Who doesn’t love a good glass of XPA with their dinner? We can’t get enough of this crisp and bright brew, which packs in plenty of character and refreshing qualities - perfect for matching with some of our favourite dishes. We reckon this is a top pairing partner for spicy Indian and Thai curries, and will work especially well with fish dishes featuring snapper, barra or flathead (among others). Deep fried savoury snacks ranging from samosas to chicken tenders will work very well, and it’s also excellent with loaded nachos, crispy noodles, grilled prawns and pork chops with a sticky glaze. Nice!
