Story
Philter's story starts, like so many good ones, with a backyard chat between mates. Neighbours Mick Neil and Stef Constantoulas, who both love beer and are fascinated by branding, saw an opportunity to make a beer brand that could be cool and make ultra-drinkable brews.
So the brand then kicked off in 2017, with a ripper XPA. From the start, the boys kicked with a unique brand vibe that blends a bit of 80s nostalgia (just check out the font) with an emphasis on all-day sessionability and more modern beer styles.
What started in that initial chat, as a backyard operation, has since grown into a state-of-the-art solar-powered brewery in an old yoghurt factory in Marrickville, complete with an awesome public bar that feels like the best of an 80s pub (just with better beers).
Meanwhile, Philter has now released over 30 beers and won a swag of brewing silverware in the process, including the Champion Australian Brewery at this year's ABA awards (aka the logies of Aussie beer).
This big, punchy Red Ale is full of bold hop aromas, with a style that sits halfway between a more aromatic Pale Ale style and a lovely, round English Ale. There's a real collage of flavours, too, with passionfruit, melon, citrus and berry notes, but also a little hint of toffee and biscuity malt. Plenty going on!
Despite all that, this brew is still so easygoing, with a roundness and easy generosity that is why the boys happily call this a 'Session Ale'.

PAIRING GUIDE
The team at Philter Brewing are putting Marrickville, NSW on the great beer map of Australia with some seriously tasty creations. This red ale is right up there with the best of them, and it’s a deeply satisfying, refreshing and comforting brew that’s sure to delight real ale fanatics up and down the country. It’s the kind of beer that works best with homely, rich and savoury flavours - meat pies, casseroles, roast red meat and stews with a thick and glossy gravy will work best. We also loved it with Moroccan-style chicken or lamb tagine, and it’s also going to taste excellent with grilled sausages (or veggie alternatives) and cheesy potato creations.
