Story

Beer first. No shortcuts.

That's been the driving motto of Modus Brewing since things first kicked off in 2014, and it's a beer ethos that is impossible to knock.

Indeed, Modus is one of the most successful craft brewers in the country, with a groaning trophy cabinet to match. Modus, in the first four years of its life, managed to win Champion Small Brewery, Champion Medium Brewery (2015) and Champion Large Brewery (2018) trophies at 'The Indies' craft brewing awards.

But it's more than just silverware - that successful journey is particularly satisfying for founders Grant and Jaz Wearin because they've driven so much of this success story solo. They tiled the kitchen and laid the bricks to make the bar at the first brewery at Mona Vale & Sydney's Northern Beaches (and now the much larger brewery at Merewether in Newcastle), with no shortage of blood, sweat and beers.

Importantly, Modus' no-shortcuts approach made it a pioneer in no-compromise brewing in this country, including as the first to insist on cold storage distribution (which ensures fresh beer), the first to use the CANimal beer packaging technology, let alone as a proud proponent of recycled materials and green power since the start.

Now, more than a decade in, Modus is still crafting quality brews with a sense of purpose.

Like many of its Modus brethren, the Hazy 3.5 has already landed a gold medal (at the Sydney Beer & Cider Show) and zero people should be surprised. This is such a clever beer - just one standard drink, but you never feel like you're drinking a mid-strength beer. Unlike plenty of hazy brew, this gently creamy and fruity number feels crisp, light on its feet and thirst-quenching giving it a real all-day sessionability that we love.
