Details
Smoky and a touch meaty, this wine embodies so many of the fantastic hallmarks of Syrah, and at a fabulous price point. We love the red and black fruit combo here, with dusty tannins, plenty of freshness and a real savoury grunt. Yum!
Origin: The first recognised wines were made in the Rhône Valley and south-eastern France. Mainly Grown In: One of the world’s leading grapes, it is found in France, Australia, the USA, Argentina and South Africa. Key Facts: Shiraz (or Syrah) is a world-beater. Starting small in the southern reaches of France, it has spread to all corners of the world and is known for producing some of the world’s great red wines, capable of perfume, power and persistence. Wines made and labelled as 'Shiraz' are luscious and fruity, loaded with plum, raisin and plenty of oaky richness. European or cooler climate expressions are often labelled as and referred to as 'Syrah', these can be more savoury and tend towards flavours of olive, black cherry and pepper. Both are equally delicious and are simply a matter of taste! Fun Fact: Though they are the same grape, when this wine is labelled a "Syrah" is often implies that the producer made it in a perfumed and elegant style. But when the wine is labelled as "Shiraz" the producer made the wine in a more decadent black fruited and chocolately style. So it's up to you if you agree with the name the producer chose!

Pairing guide
The team at Viña Mercedes have pulled out all the stops in the creation of this gorgeous Syrah wine, which packs plenty of punch with its depth of flavour and delightful complexity. It’s a great wine for pairing with Mediterranean dishes combining chicken with aromatic herbs, chorizo and white beans, and will work very well indeed with your Sunday roast leg of lamb, duck or topside of beef. Barbecued vegetables and red meat, game dishes and bistro favourites like cassoulet and ratatouille would also come highly recommended.

Wine region
Castilla-La Mancha, Spain
La Mancha is a wine region in Spain known for its hot and dry climate, high altitude vineyards, and significant grape production the top sub-regions are Almansa, Jumilla, and Manchuela, each with its own unique wine styles. The terroir across these regions can be characterized by the high chalk content of its soil, which helps to retain moisture during the arid summers. The top wine styles produced in La Mancha are primarily red wines made from the Tempranillo grape, including the well-known Crianza and the top tier Reserva styles, as well as Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. However, the region also produces some white wines made from the fruity Airen grape, which is a native varietal of La Mancha and one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the world.
