Tucked away in South Africa’s sunny Robertson Valley, Van Loveren isn’t just a winery - it’s a full-blown family saga with roots that go back to 1937. It all started when Hennie Retief Snr bought a little patch of land, named it after his wife’s ancestor (Christina van Loveren - cute, right?), and began making sweet wine and brandy-bound juice like most folks did back then. But things got interesting in the ’70s when his sons Nico and Wynand turned up with fresh ideas and a thirst for innovation. Suddenly, dry whites were in, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay were on the scene, and by 1980, Van Loveren launched its first official wine brand - just 500 cases, but enough to kick off a legacy. Fast-forward to today, and Van Loveren is the biggest family-owned winery in South Africa. Still run by the Retiefs (now into the fourth generation!), they’re producing wines for every mood, playlist, and picnic. But they’re not just about good times in a bottle. These folks walk the talk - from launching South Africa’s first successful BEE land reform deal in the wine industry (respect!) to powering the winery with solar panels, conserving rare ecosystems, and turning volcanic soil (yep, actual ancient volcanic rock) into something pretty magical. Add in 600 hectares of protected land, a water-wise vineyard program, and a hiking trail for nature lovers, and you’ve got a place that’s as proud of its land as it is of its Chenin. In short? Van Loveren is where passion meets purpose, where wine is made for everyone, and where every bottle comes with a good story and even better vibes. Come thirsty.

Pairing guide
This Cap Classique is a total crowd-pleaser when it comes to food - bright, bubbly, and versatile. Pop it alongside fresh oysters, smoked salmon blinis, or tempura prawns for classic sparkle pairings. It also loves anything cheesy and creamy: think triple-cream Brie, goat’s cheese tart, or even a rich mushroom risotto. Going plant-based? Try it with roasted cauliflower steaks, citrus-dressed salads, or crispy zucchini fritters. Basically, if it’s got crunch, creaminess, or a bit of salt - this fizz is in.
