Details
This is a much fleshier, richer expression of Sangiovese than say, a classic Chianti, and we love it! Expect plenty of primary fruit opulence, a bag full of tannic grip and a fabulous smoky, almost black olive savoury character. This is an easy-drinking red, with a more serious side to it.
Since the estate was taken over in the mid-1990s, it has quadrupled in size from 25 hectares to 100. Val delle Rose occupies prime real estate in Tuscany's Morellino di Scansano, which is one of the most southerly appellations in arguably Italy's most famous wine region. Morellino is actually the local name for the mighty Sangiovese grape variety, and Scansano is the name of the aforementioned southerly village, so 'Morello di Scansano' quite literally translates to 'Sangiovese from Scansano'. This appellation has gained DOCG status, which is the highest mark of quality for Italian wine. The styles here tend to be a bit more muscular and rich than you might expect, say from Chianti. Val delle Rose is now under the stewardship of the Cecchi Family. Their acquisition has seen significant investment into both the vineyards and the winery. Their wines are impressive and delicious and are fantastic hallmarks of the town, and region from where they hail.

Pairing guide
It’s always a delight to discover yet another superb bottle of Sangiovese, as this particular wine style has such an affinity for the kind of food we just can’t get enough of. It’s a clear winner with traditional and rustic Italian dishes - gnocchi with sage and parmesan, bolognese sauce and other ragu dishes, aubergine parmigiana and slow-cooked pork or lamb casseroles with plenty of herbs and polenta. It’s also great with Mexican and Spanish cuisine, will work well with homemade burgers and grilled ribs, and is delicious with roast pork dinners or a creamy mushroom risotto.

Wine region

Tuscany, Italy
Tuscany is a region located in central Italy known for its rolling hills, beautiful countryside, and rich cultural and artistic heritage. But for us, it’s synonymous with wine, mainly those of Chianti. The Tuscany wine region is located in central Italy and is known for producing formidable red wines made from grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The area is home to several famous wine regions, including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which are known for producing some of Italy's most highly regarded wines. Notable producers include Antinori for their legendary Chianti and Tenuta San Guido for their fabled Sassicaia label.
