Details
This delicious Primitivo blend is giving black cherries, stewed blackberries, juicy blueberries and plush black plum. The palate is layered with black pepper, liquorice and warm sweet spices, supported by mineral undertones and a lift of red cherries too. It's dry, spicy and fruit-driven, bold without being heavy and finishes with satisfying depth.
Origin: Bizarrely enough, Croatia. Italy is home these days though. Mainly Grown In: Italy. Still a few outcroppings in Croatia. Big plantings in the USA, where it goes by the name Zinfandel. Key Facts: Primitivo in Italy, Zinfandel in the USA. In decades past this was almost always made as a blockbuster wine, big alcohol and buckets of fruit. More recently though, things are a-changing. You'll see prettier red fruits as opposed to figs and raisins, with earlier picking of the grapes resulting in lower alcohols and softer textures. The USA versions will traditionally show plenty of oak spice, and in Italy, it is made in a range of styles and price points, from easy-drinking table wine to high-quality, age-worthy robust reds. Fun Fact: The warm climate of inland California is home to plenty of Zinfandel plantings, and the burning sun pushes the ripeness levels of these wines to the MAX. Don't be surprised to see alcohol levels above 15% - these wines are super fruity!

Pairing guide
This Primitivo blend with a spicy, dark fruit profile makes it a brilliant partner for hearty dishes. Think slow-cooked lamb, spiced beef stews or grilled aubergine with smoky flavours. For a vegan pairing, go for lentil and mushroom ragù with thyme and black pepper, served over creamy polenta or tagliatelle. The earthiness of the mushrooms and the depth of the lentils mirror the wine’s black fruit and spice, while the peppery notes tie everything together beautifully.

Wine region

Puglia, Italy
Puglia is a wine region in the "heel" of Italy that is known for its red, white, and rosé wines. The full-bodied red wines are often made with Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, while the whites are usually made with Verdeca and Fiano grapes. Puglia has a hot, sunny climate which helps the grapes ripen fully and gives the wines a rich flavour. The region is also home to some unique grape varieties, like Nero di Troia and Bombino Nero. So, if you're a fan of Italian wine, definitely give Puglia a try! Historically Puglia has been better known for its quantity of wine over its quality. But thanks to a number of quality-focused producers, the region is turning that narrative around.
