Details
Whilst a lot of white Rioja tends to see significant ageing in barrel; making for some of the most complex whites in all of Spain, at Good Pair Days we have always been in love with the zesty and crisp styles that Macabeo (Viura) can produce from this part of the world. Lemons and limes dominate here making for a seriously easy-sipping number!

Origin: Penedès in south-eastern Spain. Mainly Grown In: Spain (in particular Rioja, where it is called Viura) or Roussillon in France (known as Rolle). Key Facts: ‘Viura’ in Rioja, ‘Macabeo’ in the rest of Spain and ‘Rolle’ in parts of France. Wherever you find it, you can be sure it's going to be a winner. Somewhat under-appreciated (like Molly Weasley), it just needs the right light to shine. In the north of Spain it is responsible for some very age-worthy whites, often aged in wood, and always with a floral/nutty edge to them. In the south of France it is often blended with Grenache Blanc to make powerful, rich styles, as well as playing a vital role in the famous pink wines of Provence. A real charmer, Viura is a grape to watch out for. Fun Fact: Although often consumed early, Macabeo responds very well to barrel ageing, taking on honeyed and nutty notes.

Pairing guide
If you’re not already a fan of white Rioja, prepare to be converted. This delicious and fully flavoured Macabeo from Torre Aldea is a joy to behold, and pairs fantastically with some seriously delicious food. Grilled chicken with tropical fruit, turkey and cranberry combos, white fish like monkfish and halibut, chunky vegetable soups and Iberian classics like croquetas, seafood paella and peri peri chicken will work brilliantly. It’s also great with fish tacos, Mexican chicken salads, and is fantastic with squid and other seafood. Yum!

Wine region
Rioja, Spain
Rioja (riˈouhɑ) is one of Spain’s most well-known wine regions, located in the north of Spain. The region has a long history of making wine that dates back to the period of the Roman Empire. The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot summers and cool winters which suits the varieties of Rioja; Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. Graciano almost became extinct due to the effects of phylloxera in the late 1800s however, luckily, the variety is back in full swing. There are three main classifications of wine according to their ageing process- Crianza, Reserve and Gran Reserva.
