Details
Where to start, this wine comes from 20-year-old vines and hits notes of honey, elderflower and rose petals on the nose. It's not too intense with the aromatics, but it's powerful at the same time. A fantastic expression of the grape with a clean finish and lots of purity.

Skoumpris is the home to one of Central Greece's hottest winemaking talents: Spiros Skoumpris. The small, boutique winery and vineyards can be found just off of Greece's mainland on the island of Evia (which is only separated from Central Greece by a slither of water). The vineyards here boast a lot of Savatiano and Moschofilero - many of the latter are old vines. The team favours a minimal intervention approach to winemaking. Production here is low, with a modest 20,000 bottles being produced each year. The vineyards form part of an old river bed with mostly sandy soil. Our wine team recently took a trip out to Greece to visit Skoumpris, we immediately fell in love with the wines and with the family. Savatiano is a grape that is gaining increasing popularity in Greece and beyond, and it is thanks in no small part to producers like Skoumpris that are finally pushing the needle with this grape. Merlot, Syrah and the more local Malagousia are also grown here.

Pairing guide
If you’re not very familiar with Moschofilero wines, you’re not alone… but we’ve got a feeling this Peloponnese variety is set to become a brand new favourite if it isn’t one already. It’s a wonderful bottle to pair with bright, summer flavours like dolmades, fried calamari salads and green chilled soups, and it will also work very well with a classic Greek salad, smacked cucumbers or vegetarian green curry. Southeast Asian recipes like satay skewers, yakitori and tonkatsu are surprisingly good matches, and it’s also great with barbecued peri-peri chicken. What’s not to love?

Wine region
Evia, Greece
Evia, It’s a Greek island also known as Euboea that has a small but bustling wine industry. The island's terroir is characterised by its mountainous terrain and proximity to the sea, which creates a mild Mediterranean climate that is conducive to sustainable grape growing. The top wine styles produced on the island include dry white wines made from the local grape variety Malagousia, as well as red wines made from Agiorgitiko and Cabernet Sauvignon. 80% of vineyard area is dedicated to white varietals. Notable producers include Domaine Economou and Avantis Estate.. Overall, Evia's wine industry is small but growing, and an excellent wine destination for intrepid.
