Details
Mainly Tempranillo here with a little bit of Garnacha, Graciano, plus white varieties Viura (Macabeo) and Malvasia. This is an intense, full-bodied wine with savoury black olive notes and lots of earthy qualities. A textural delight, with fine tannins from 17 months in oak and then three years bottle age before release. Plenty of freshness and life, drinking superbly, high quality Rioja.
La Rioja is a wine region which needs no real introduction; the complex, bold, and beautiful red wines from this part of northern Spain have been at the top of wine lovers’ wishlists for centuries. Remelluri is a beautiful winery, located on an idyllic farm in Labastida, and one which has played a long-standing role in upholding the pristine reputation of this world-beating corner of the world of fine wine. Run by the noble Rodriguez Hemandorea family, who recreated their ancestral vineyards in the style of a Bordeaux chateau, the winery employs a refreshingly modern approach while deeply respecting the oenological roots of the region. Current vintner Telmo Rodriguez has worked tirelessly to elevate the winery from a heritage operation to a forerunner on the local and international scene. In doing so, he’s succeeded in transmitting both the terroir and the Remelluri style via unforgettable wines, perfect for contemporary audiences seeking to gain a deeper understanding of Rioja.

Pairing guide
Tempranillo is one of those wine varietals it’s almost impossible not to get excited about, and this beautiful bottle from Remelluri ticks all the right boxes for us here at GPD. It’s a stunning wine to pair with homemade lamb burgers and koftas, and it’s also delicious with Italian cured pork products, meat feast pizzas, and anything served with a hefty portion of aged parmesan or Manchego cheese. Moroccan tagines will work well here, as will classics like chili con carne, homemade beef tacos, and chicken fajitas. Nice!

Wine region

Rioja, Spain
Rioja (riˈouhɑ) is one of Spain’s most well-known wine regions, located in the north of Spain. The region has a long history of making wine that dates back to the period of the Roman Empire. The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot summers and cool winters which suits the varieties of Rioja; Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. Graciano almost became extinct due to the effects of phylloxera in the late 1800s however, luckily, the variety is back in full swing. There are three main classifications of wine according to their ageing process- Crianza, Reserve and Gran Reserva.
