Details
Oh my, this is a masterclass in the balance between spicy oak, soft fruit and texture. The Devonian is layered, weighing in at 13%, this is not a big, bold wine. Soft notes of lime and green apples gently lift themselves from the glass, complete with a subtle shortbread, patisserie undertow. This is elegant and soft, with keen freshness and a lick of minerality.

South Africa’s wine scene has to be one of the most exciting and dynamic in the world right now, having been thrust forwards in recent years by an influx of creative and innovative winemakers dominating and evolving the industry. Rascallion is a relative newcomer to Stellenbosch - the brainchild of Ross Sleet, who spent years working at a number of high-ranking SA wineries, it’s dedicated to bringing the art of blending to a country which has historically only dealt with single varietal bottles. Sleet’s brand is based 100% on blended wines, and he has set himself the mission of demonstrating how the country’s signature varietals (among a handful of others selected for body, colour, and depth) can work in harmony, aging alongside each other to produce wines which are more than the sum of their parts. The results have been impressive, to say the least, and will no doubt be enormously influential upon the next generation of innovative Stellenbosch innovators. Even more importantly, they taste fantastic!

Pairing guide
It’s been truly exciting to witness the Chenin Blanc renaissance over the past few years, and this gorgeous bottle from Rascallion showcases just why we love the contemporary style of this classic white so much. It’s a great food pairing wine, and one which is going to bring great results when paired with southeast Asian flavours, sweet ‘n’ sour dishes, spicy prawns and other shellfish, cod with chorizo combos, and all kinds of delicate white fish like bass and bream. Creamy pasta sauces, pork tenderloin and curries like korma and pasanda will also offer unforgettable results!
