Details
This is brilliant. A smoky Syrah with tarred fruit, feral notes of animal hide and a touch of violet lift. A classy number, give it an hour or so to open up and you'll be rewarded. It could be from the Rhône valley in France. Delicious.

Quinta do Casal Branco is a brand new addition for us here at Good Pair Days and an impressive producer discovered back in 2023 during a trip out to Portugal in search of vinous gold. Impressed by the wines from the Tejo region - a true up-and-coming part of the country - this is the land of the Fernão Pires and Castelão grapes, both of which are indigenous to the region. The Tejo is a remarkable terroir, with vineyards formed largely from old riverbeds made up of sandy-stony soils. The team at Quinta do Casal Branco are a traditional one for sure. The 18th-century estate is stunning, with around 128 hectares under vine, cultivating a host of grape varieties with the aforementioned, plus Syrah leading the way. We are delighted to have finally landed these wines, they are certainly not to be missed!

Pairing guide
We all love a good Syrah wine - it’s one of those red wine styles that never fails to satisfy the senses, especially if served alongside a heaving plate of deeply savoury food and shared amongst friends! We loved this characterful bottle with game meats like venison - especially if slowly cooked as part of a chilli, bolognese, cottage pie or lasagna! It’s also going to be brilliant with barbecued steaks, chops and ribs, deeply savoury bean and lentil stews, roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, and homemade burgers and meatball dishes, too.
