Details
This is a very impressive expression of Primitivo at this price point. Puglia's flagship variety is singing in this wine with notes of baked blackcurrants, fig and raisin. In the mouth there is a wonderful lick of oak creaminess and a delightfully inviting, integrated vanilla quality on the finish. An absolute gem of a wine and a must-have on the wine shelf for any red wine lover.

We don't know how many times we have to say it, but we continue to be blown away by the quite stunning value of southern Italian wine producers. You can always rely on wineries from the likes of Puglia and Sicily to overdeliver when it comes to the price vs quality trade off. Enter Mezzogiorno. These guys are doing everything right in Puglia, the heel of Italy. They produce only single varietal wines, to show off the best of the grape types that they work with, and each and every one of their wines is a stunning, classical example of both its sense of place, and its variety. From Fiano to Falanghina; Primitivo to Sangiovese (Italy's most famous red grape), the Mezzogiorno range is one of unwavering typicity and quality as the team masterfully bring out the best in the indigenous grape varieties that furnish the southern Italian landscape. Whilst Mezzogiorno translates to 'noon' in English (a good time for a glass of wine we reckon), it also refers to the southern regions of Italy, and we can't think of a better producer to represent those appellations.

Pairing guide
Primitivo has long since risen from obscurity to become a red wine lover’s staple, and this bottle from Mezzogiorno showcases exactly why that ascendance has been more than justified. Eminently food-friendly, this southern Italian red is going to pair perfectly with the meatiest of meats; oxtail, beef offal, fattier cuts of beef steak, and smoked pork. However, it’s also great with rich tomato sauces, classic minced meat ragùs, eggplant recipes, and bean soups, too!

Wine region
Puglia, Italy
Puglia is a wine region in the "heel" of Italy that is known for its red, white, and rosé wines. The full-bodied red wines are often made with Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, while the whites are usually made with Verdeca and Fiano grapes. Puglia has a hot, sunny climate which helps the grapes ripen fully and gives the wines a rich flavour. The region is also home to some unique grape varieties, like Nero di Troia and Bombino Nero. So, if you're a fan of Italian wine, definitely give Puglia a try! Historically Puglia has been better known for its quantity of wine over its quality. But thanks to a number of quality-focused producers, the region is turning that narrative around.
