Details
Yet again, this is proof that high quality Pinot Grigio is out there folks, and that this underestimated grape variety should not just be subject to the bottom booze shelf at the shops. Ripe red apple and fresh lemon dominate the nose that also displays a lovely herbal character. More orchard fruit in the mouth is complimented by notes of fennel and thyme. This is taught, with plenty of texture and breadth.
Few wine producers anywhere in the world embody the philosophy of producing alpine wines as much as the crew at Erste + Neue. Italy's Alto Adige region, which boarders Austria, isn't the easiest to navigate or to raise vines on. It is mountainous, rugged, and vineyard work must be carried out by hand. As one might expect, there is a huge and diverse range of altitudes, microclimates and soil types that allow Erste + Neue to create a varied, quality portfolio synonymous with the grapes that are native to what is one of Italy's smallest wine regions. Erste + Neue produce eight whites and three reds from their 'Classic' range. This offering is a stunning snapshot of Alto Adige wine; look out for high quality Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer as well as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which both do very well in this part of the world. Alto Adige is also home to some excellent red wine production; the region receives outstanding sun exposure and gets pretty warm through the summer, allowing the Erste + Neue team to create a range of reds of outstanding balance with some alpine, herbal qualities.

Pairing guide
Pinot Grigio is one of those white wine styles that’s just made for lazy afternoons spent in the company of good friends and fine food, and this bottle from Erste + Neue is no exception. We really enjoyed pairing this wine with grilled white fish, roast chicken, and creamy pork pasta dishes, and it’s also going to be great with simple risottos, homemade pâté, and cream cheeses. Fish ‘n’ chips will work well with this wine, but you’ll get equally good results with Indian and Thai curries, and anything with a punch of horseradish or wasabi.

Wine region

Alto Adige, Italy
Alto Adige is an alpine region located at the southern tip of Tyrol, Austria, making it Italy’s most northern wine region. Given the region’s long history as a border town, it’s perhaps no surprise that German is the local language here. This goes some way to explain the melting pot of varieties available here, where you’ll find Austrian, German, French and native varieties in peaceful co-existence. But there’s no doubt that the French-turned-Italian Pinot Grigio is the hero of this region!
The elevation ranges from 200m-1000m above sea level, but local wisdom has found 350m-550m to be the optimum for ripeness and avoiding frost! Higher elevations of Alto Adige around Bolzano grow especially good Riesling, Sylvaner, Kerner and Veltliners. But the lower slopes of Alto Adige yield the region’s legendary Pinot Grigio and Pinot Bianco, and to a lesser extent, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. The region also makes delicious reds, including Lagrein, Schiava and Pinot Noir!
