Details
This gutsy Aglianico has a gorgeous sweet nose of red and black cherry fruit, liquorice and a welcomed dollop of balsamic. It doesn't pull any punches on the palate, with tight, knitted tannins and layers of black olive, fig and more dark cherry right through to the finish. A delicious wine, and a faithful example of Aglianico: 'The Barolo of the South'.
Donna Elvira is owned by Tony Fink who was brought up in the UK. The success of his construction business allowed him to eventually return to his roots in Campania in Italy and run the Estate which is named after his mother. Fink is on a mission to change wine drinkers' perceptions of the Campania region. He maintains that so many of us lean towards Chianti, Barolo or Pinot Grigio, and often overlook the other wonderful wines of this part of Italy. The team champions indigenous varietals such as Falanginha, Greco, Fiano (whites) and Aglianico (red) in a bid to create a portfolio that prioritises quality over quantity. Fink and the team at Donna Elvira are just one of many examples of the outstanding diversity of the Italian wine scene. Their wines from Irpina and Campania DOC(Gs) are some of the finest examples of these local grape varieties we have come across in quite a while. They provide a serious showcase as to what is up for grabs in Italy when you start to dig a little deeper into its rich fruit basket of wines.

Pairing guide
We’re big fans of Aglianico wines here at Good Pair Days HQ - there’s something about this robust red that never fails to satisfy the senses! All that flavour and character calls for some boisterous food pairings; match this wine with hearty oxtail, racks of ribs, sirloin steak, or deeply-savoury lamb, beef, or goat stews, and you’re onto a winner. Smoky aubergine dishes and griddled zucchini will also work well here, and you’ll love pairing this wine with spicy sausages, game meats, and rich ragù sauces.

Wine region
Campania, Italy
Campania is a region in Southern Italy known for producing rich and eminently drinkable wines. Volcanic soils, high elevation, and a dry Mediterranean climate influence Campania’s vineyards. Campania embraces its native varieties, Aglianico, Fiano and Greco grapes, and a sweet, aromatic white called Falanghina. The top sub-regions of Campania include Avellino, where the famous white wine, Fiano di Avellino, is produced, and Taurasi, known for producing some of the most structured and long-lived Aglianico! No wonder they call it the Nebbiolo of the south! With a growing local and global interest in the region's indigenous grape varieties, a new generation of winemakers is focused on raising the bar and solidifying Campania’s standing on the world stage of wine.
