Details
Fresh and lively from the first swirl, this blend bursts with ripe black cherry, wild blackberry and a touch of juicy plum. There’s a gentle stony minerality running through it, keeping everything lifted and energetic. On the palate, hints of red liquorice and cracked pepper add a playful spice, while the finish stays vibrant, smooth and lightly peppery. It’s fruit-forward, balanced and dangerously easy to pour again.
Origin: Southern Italy. Mainly Grown In: Puglia, particularly the sun-drenched Salento peninsula, with smaller plantings elsewhere in southern Italy and a handful of warm-climate regions abroad. Key Facts: Negroamaro is one of Puglia’s signature red grapes and has been rooted in the region for centuries. Its name roughly translates to “black and bitter” (dramatic, we know), but don’t let that fool you. While it can carry a pleasantly bitter edge, the wines are typically packed with dark cherry, blackberry and plum, often layered with dried herbs, tobacco and earthy spice. Tannins are present but smooth, acidity keeps things lively, and there’s often a rustic, sun-baked character that speaks clearly of southern Italy. It can be bold and structured or surprisingly fresh and vibrant depending on how it’s made - but it always brings personality to the glass. Fun Fact: Negroamaro is famously drought-resistant and thrives in Puglia’s hot, dry climate, handling intense sun like an absolute pro. When other grapes might struggle in the southern heat, Negroamaro just settles in and ripens happily. It's built for sunshine, basically.

Pairing guide
This red shines with dishes that are rustic and rich. Try it with sticky barbecue ribs, wood-fired Margherita pizza, grilled chicken skewers with oregano and lemon, or a baked aubergine parmigiana bubbling with tomato and herbs. For a fresh vegan pairing, go for a roasted red pepper and walnut pasta with garlic, olive oil and a sprinkle of chilli. The sweetness of the peppers brings out the wine’s black cherry core, while the peppery edge slices neatly through the richness of the sauce. Bright, balanced and built for relaxed dinners with good company.

Wine region

Puglia, Italy
Puglia is a wine region in the "heel" of Italy that is known for its red, white, and rosé wines. The full-bodied red wines are often made with Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, while the whites are usually made with Verdeca and Fiano grapes. Puglia has a hot, sunny climate which helps the grapes ripen fully and gives the wines a rich flavour. The region is also home to some unique grape varieties, like Nero di Troia and Bombino Nero. So, if you're a fan of Italian wine, definitely give Puglia a try! Historically Puglia has been better known for its quantity of wine over its quality. But thanks to a number of quality-focused producers, the region is turning that narrative around.
