Details
The vines used for De Angeles' 'Viña 1924 Gran' cuvée are seriously old - some of the oldest vines in Argentina - and offer this wine unparalleled concentration and finesse. Toast, smoke, tar and tobacco-laced red fruits manifest, with a slightly wild, feral character. A superb wine, and one of the best Malbecs you will ever get your hands on.
Argentina is home to some of the most popular wines made from Malbec in the world. Producers are often pretty large-scale, pumping out great quality, yet sometimes over-subscribed wines, particularly destined for the UK drinker. So when those small, boutique producers of outstanding quality pop up, it is our job to take notice of these producers and do our part to champion them. Say hello to Guillermo Barbier and Juan Manuel Gonzalez, the men behind De Angeles Viña 1924, some of the most exciting small-production winemakers in Argentina. Situated in Vistalba, which stylistically straddles Lujan de Cuyo and Mendoza's Uco Valley, the single vineyard of De Angeles is named 'Viña 1924'. The pair have shown zero ambition to extend their holdings, instead, they work tirelessly with what they have, working with ungrafted old vines and producing wines of elegance, purity and restraint - not always descriptors one would associate with Argentina. These are some of the finest Malbecs we have had the pleasure of tasting, they are handcrafted, small batch and deserving of a status amongst some of the best wines from Argentina.

Pairing guide
A good Malbec is always going to make a lasting impression when it comes to mealtimes, especially if said mealtime features chargrilled hunks of red meat, barbecued chops and steaks, or smoky root vegetables or meat replacement products. Inky mushrooms, roast aubergine, padron peppers and ragu sauces will be excellent here, and it’s also very good with cheesy polenta, Tex-Mex favourites like chilli con carne and rich mole sauces.
