Details
Where to start?! This red wine is simply world-class. Aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, from 100-year-old vines. This is wild, with lashings of vanilla, smoke and sweet spice. The fruit density is there for all to see, with intense black cherry and blackcurrant character. Stunning.
Ribera del Duero is arguably Spain's highest quality wine region that has not achieved DOCa status; a title that belongs only to Priorat and of course, Rioja - although, there are one or two other regions that might have something to say about that! The winery for Convento San Francisco was designed by an architect from California... OK not really. Instead, it is set in an old renovated monastery that belonged to a Franciscan convent, records go back as far as 1265, and this is where the winery takes its name from. Young, exciting winemaker Raquel Acebes looks after the production of grapes from vineyards that boast over 100-year-old vines. Most of the fruit is Tempranillo - the jewel in the crown of Spanish wine - also known locally as Tinto Fino. However, their top wine, which bears the same name as the estate itself, has around 10% Merlot, offering a subtle rounded texture to this quite sensational wine. This is a modern Ribera del Duero of supreme quality.

Pairing guide
You really can’t beat a good Tempranillo at dinner time - there’s something about this bold and deliciously tempting red wine style that always hits the spot with a wide range of dishes. This beautiful bottle is going to be fantastic with all kinds of Spanish and Mexican red meat dishes, as well as with Cajun, Creole and Caribbean cuisine ranging from a hearty gumbo to a classic bowl of curry goat. Chorizo and other spiced charcuterie will be excellent, as will ragu dishes with polenta, meaty dumplings, wild mushrooms and bitter greens braised with garlic and sage.
