Details
Madiran reds are the strong-arm wrestlers of the wine world – bold, muscular, but with surprising finesse if you get to know them. This Tannat blend packs in dark plum, blackberry, and earthy spice with a solid, velvety grip. Perfect for hearty dinners, or just proving you can handle the big stuff.

The French wine scene can be somewhat of a minefield at times, all we really want is a supplier that makes wines from all across the country while still displaying regional and sub-regional typicity.. Simple right?!? Enter Maison Johanès Boubée, a winery that has succeeded in the French landscape, albeit relatively unknown outside its borders. The winery has access to all the finest products around the country, and aside from an impressive winemaking team, it has also employed sommeliers to taste each wine and confirm that it meets the all-important terroir feel of each region. The winery is a nod to the old-school way, where you didn’t need to boast a fancy label to sell a bottle of wine, and the juice inside is the most crucial part. We have tasted through an extensive range of their wines and are very impressed with the overall quality in each bottle. The ‘Carte Noire’ range focuses on the regions that don’t get the same amount of attention as the golden children of France, Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne receive.

Pairing guide
Bold and structured with dark fruit, spice, and earthy depth, Carte Noire Madiran Tannat Blend is built for rich, hearty dishes. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, duck confit, or braised beef cheeks. It’s also excellent with mature cheeses like Comté or Manchego, and can even stand up to game meats or cassoulet. A wine for cooler nights and lingering dinners.

Wine region
Madiran, France
Madiran is a small wine region in southwest France, with a reputation for heavy hitting red wines made primarily from the Tannat. The region is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains and has a terroir of sandy, gravelly soils with patches of clay and limestone. The region is divided into three sub-zones, each with its own microclimate and subtle but key differences. The wines of Madiran are known for their robust tannins and deep flavour of dark fruit, liquorice, and spice. Not exactly a super food, but did you know Tannat, the region's dominant grape variety, has one of the highest levels of the antioxidant compound procyanidin among all red grape varieties, making Madiran wines not only delicious but potentially beneficial for health. *Raises brow*
