Details
This is 100% Grillo, 100% vegan, and 100% summer in a glass. Bright and zesty, it’s bursting with lemon, crunchy green apple, juicy peach, and a touch of sea spray - like a coastal breeze with wildflower pollen. Fresh, crisp, and quietly complex, it’s the kind of white that feels just as at home with seafood as it does solo on a sunny afternoon.

Origin: One thing we know, Italy! But a little uncertain as to where within. Some say Sicily, while others think it came to be in Puglia. Mainly Grown In: Sicily. Most famously in Marsala, but grown across the island. Some can also be found in Liguria, Italy. Key Facts: Can you handle the heat? Grillo sure can! This grape is one of the champion white varietals of southern Italy where, boy, do the vineyards get scorched! Not a worry for Grillo though, it maintains its fresh confident character and high acidity despite the extremely hot and arid growing conditions of Sicily. Once better known for its contribution to the famous fortified wines of Marsala, Grillo has pushed ahead and started turning heads with its new modernised style; dry, fun, and fresh. In fact, Grillo has levelled its way up to be recognised as one of the new quintessential Italian table wines. It's no surprise with the spectrum of citrus, apple, floral and nutty flavours it consistently provides in each pour. Fun Fact: Unlike other Sicilian varieties, Grillo is not an ancient grape but instead a relatively new kid on the block. Genetic analysis confirm that it is the result of a crossing between Catarratto and Zibibbo that took place in the 19th century.

Pairing guide
Grillo at lunchtime? Say less. This fresh, easygoing white from Cantina Birgi is made for laid-back meals that still feel a bit fancy. It’s a natural with pasta - think lemony seafood spaghetti, creamy carbonara, or even a cheeky pesto rigatoni with loads of basil and parmesan. If you're feeling more fishy, it’s a winner with mussels, garlic prawns, or a buttery lobster roll. Basically, if your lunch involves herbs, shellfish, or pasta and you’ve got this Grillo on hand, you’re absolutely nailing it.

Wine region
Sicily, Italy
Sicily is a productive island located in the Mediterranean Sea, off the southern coast of Italy. The island has a varied landscape, with low coastal plains to hills and even active volcanic mountains. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Disease pressure is low thanks to drying coastal breezes making the region ideal for organic farming practices. The soils are volcanic, sandy, and clay. Sicily can be divided into three wine regions, including the volcanic Etna DOC on the eastern side of the island, known for its red wines made from the Nerello Mascalese grape. The Marsala DOC on the island's western side is known for its fortified wines. The remaining Southeast of the Island produces a range of wines, notably Frappato and Nero d’Avola.
