Details
This is a quite beautiful iteration of Garnacha (Grenache) with bags of energy and bright, youthful fruit across the nose and palate. Expect a ripe, almost Fruit Pastille-Haribo quality to the fruit with lots of freshness. This is a fabulous example of a Joven-style red, with soft, powdery tannins and a lovely concentration of flavour.

Bodegas Burgo Viejo is a multi-award-winning outfit in Spain's most famous wine region: Rioja. The estate was conceived in the late 1980s when a group of six winegrowing families joined forces, combining the strength of over 200 hectares of vineyards and centuries of collective winemaking experience and as a result, the quality and breadth of the Burgo Viejo portfolio is not something to be sniffed at. The estate is planted with Rioja's usual suspects, from Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache) and Graciano on the red side of the spectrum, to Viura (Macabeo) and Tempranillo Blanco on the white, many of which are grown and farmed according to organic practice. Head winemaker Gorka Etxebarria meticulously oversees the production of Burgo Viejo's wines; Gorka seamlessly blends in the old with the new, with a winemaking degree from the University of La Rioja as well as valuable experience in prominent wine regions across Australia. The core range of wine at Burgo is quite stunning, true-to-their-place wines that are indicative of Rioja, however, it is their impressive 'ECO' range, the latter of which really caught our eye here at Good Pair Days.

Pairing guide
This Old Vine Grenache is beautifully expressive and deeply juicy, offering mountains of fruit flavour and all the food pairing potential that comes with it. Perfect with a big Sunday roast and all the trimmings, this wine is also going to pair very well with all kinds of chicken, turkey, pork, lamb and duck stews and casseroles, veggie favourites like ratatouille and vegetarian lasagne, and tomato-based pasta sauces will be fantastic too. A chicken tikka masala is a surprisingly fitting pairing, and you’ll even find great results pairing this wine with roast salmon, seared sesame tuna and Moroccan and other Middle Eastern flavours.

Wine region
Rioja, Spain
Rioja (riˈouhɑ) is one of Spain’s most well-known wine regions, located in the north of Spain. The region has a long history of making wine that dates back to the period of the Roman Empire. The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot summers and cool winters which suits the varieties of Rioja; Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano. Graciano almost became extinct due to the effects of phylloxera in the late 1800s however, luckily, the variety is back in full swing. There are three main classifications of wine according to their ageing process- Crianza, Reserve and Gran Reserva.
