Details
The ‘Costa Alicante’ range is a delight with eye-popping bottles and the wine inside is equally as vibrant. This Airén blend has plenty of zesty lemon, green apple and dill notes at play, broadening across the palate with lemon skin, fleshy acidity and a lovely finishing weight.
Origin: Most likely Spain, specifically northern Spain – it’s been grown in Rioja and Catalonia for centuries. Mainly Grown In: Spain (especially Rioja, Catalonia, and Valencia), France (where it’s called Macabeu, mostly in Languedoc-Roussillon), and smaller amounts in Portugal. Key Facts: Macabeo is the quiet multitasker of the wine world. It might not grab headlines like Chardonnay or Riesling, but it plays a leading role in everything from Cava to crisp white Rioja. Its flavours tend to be light and fresh – think green apple, pear, white flowers and a subtle nutty bitterness on the finish – but it’s incredibly adaptable. Want something young and zippy? Macabeo’s got you. Prefer something creamy and aged in oak or on lees? Macabeo can do that too. It’s a blank canvas grape with range, structure, and the ability to shine solo or in a blend. Fun Fact: In white Rioja, Macabeo is often labelled as Viura – same grape, different name.

Pairing guide
We can’t get enough of this delicious Macabeo blend by Pinoso, which offers a real masterclass in balance and vibrancy alike. It’s the perfect white to pair with a wide range of tasty fish, shellfish, and white meat dishes - especially those that pack in plenty of fresh herbs and citrus flourishes - and it’s also going to be fantastic with green veggies and soft cheeses. Spring vegetable dishes, veggie fritters, stuffed chicken breast, and prawns on the barbecue will all also work as a treat.
