Details
This rare red grape is absolutely singing in Gordonzello's Inicio. Black cherry and spicy smoke dominate with lashing of blueberry compote and a wonderful herbal fragrance. Fancy trying something new? Here it is!

Origin: Spain. Mainly Grown In: León, Spain. Key Facts: You’d be forgiven for not hearing about Prieto Picudo before. Not only is this grape indigenous to, and more or less exclusively grown in Spain, but it’s pretty much exclusive to the Castilla y León region. This grape is a bit of a workhorse in the vineyard and is super resistant to drought conditions, it crops reasonably high without dropping in quality and it has some attractive aromas and good freshness. Usually, it is blended with Tempranillo - the king of Spanish grapes - and it is pretty rare to find it as a standalone grape variety. Fun Fact: ‘Prieto’ means ‘dark’ in Spanish, which is a reference to the colour of the berries that this variety produces.

Pairing guide
Prieto Picudo isn’t the most well known red variety out there, but we’ve got a hunch it may well become a brand new favourite. This partly comes down to its brilliant versatility when it comes to food - this is a wine for pairing with strong, bold and intense flavours! We loved it with game dishes like venison with blackberries, guinea fowl with a spicy rub, and grilled steaks with a mushroom or peppercorn sauce. Wild mushrooms, garlic vegetables, barbecued beef with polenta and vegetarian alternatives like smoked seitan will work a treat.
