Ah, a Tempranillo with a little bit of grunt! Expect vibrant notes of cherry fruit, a lick of gravel and a dusting of liquorice with this wine. The mid-palate is soft and plump, with a lovely, attractive black olive savoury character on the finish.

Meet Tempranillo, a Spanish grape with a confident backbone of tannin balanced with sweeter red fruits like cherries and strawberries and with an alluring kick of spice. Tempranillo is praised both in its youth as well as being able to age. In fact, in Rioja, they have an entire grading system based on the time it spends ageing in oak. The more time in oak, the more expensive, and the more you will notice flavours becoming more leathery and savoury. It is important to remember, however, that more time in oak does not necessarily mean it is better quality. Fun Fact: If you get tricked into drinking Tempranillo with some mates it's called 'The Tempra Trap'.

The terroir across these regions can be characterized by the high chalk content of its soil, which helps to retain moisture during the arid summers. The top wine styles produced in La Mancha are primarily red wines made from the Tempranillo grape, including the well-known Crianza and the top tier Reserva styles, as well as Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. However, the region also produces some white wines made from the fruity Airen grape, which is a native varietal of La Mancha and one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the world.
