Details
A slightly riper iteration of Airén here, complete with attractive and alluring notes of orange blossom and clementine interlaced with greener notes of fresh pears. Look out for more subtle flavours of orange on the palate, with a lovely chalky character and a clean, fresh finish with subtle hints of quince.

Origin: Spain. Mainly Grown In: Spain. Key Facts: Airén is arguably the world’s most prolific grape variety that you've never heard of. It is almost entirely planted in Spain, in particular across the La Mancha plateau where in the summer months, it gets super warm, and Airén has the ability to cope with the heat very well, without losing too much acidity. It is traditionally used for much of Spain’s brandy production (which is why you might not have heard of it before) but when it is treated well and given the respect it deserves, it has the ability to make easy-drinking and approachable white wines that blend well with a number of local, and more international grape varieties in Spain. Fun Fact: Airén is often used in the production of Spanish brandy, where it is distilled, instead of fermented.

Pairing guide
We just can’t get enough of this beautiful Airen wine from Bodegas del Saz, which perfectly matches those brisk citrus flavours with a remarkable easy-drinking character. The obvious pairings here are white fish dishes, seafood creations and Spanish rice classics, but you’ll also find great results with Chinese lemon chicken, creamy pork pasta recipes and plenty of green vegetable dishes. Mexican fish and vegetarian tacos will work well, as will a crisp green leaf salad.

Wine region
Castilla-La Mancha, Spain
La Mancha is a wine region in Spain known for its hot and dry climate, high altitude vineyards, and significant grape production the top sub-regions are Almansa, Jumilla, and Manchuela, each with its own unique wine styles. The terroir across these regions can be characterized by the high chalk content of its soil, which helps to retain moisture during the arid summers. The top wine styles produced in La Mancha are primarily red wines made from the Tempranillo grape, including the well-known Crianza and the top tier Reserva styles, as well as Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. However, the region also produces some white wines made from the fruity Airen grape, which is a native varietal of La Mancha and one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the world.
